Which player should a Flutter OTT app use?
A native-backed player — ExoPlayer on Android, AVPlayer on iOS — wrapped in Flutter controls. Flutter's default video widget lacks the adaptive streaming and DRM support OTT products need.
Playback that holds up on a ₹8,000 phone and a television three metres away — HLS streams, adaptive bitrate, resume, subtitles and the DRM solution your content provider supplies.
HLS · Adaptive bitrate · Resume · Subtitles · Android TV · Fire TV
Flutter's built-in video widget is fine for simple clips and poor for OTT. A production streaming app usually needs a player built on ExoPlayer for Android and AVPlayer for iOS, with shared controls on top.
That gives adaptive bitrate, buffering strategy, subtitle tracks, audio tracks, quality selection and the events needed for analytics.
Resume where they left off, skip intro, next episode, a loading state that shows progress, controls that hide after a few seconds, and a back button that does not accidentally exit the app. On TV, focus movement between controls is part of the experience.
These are small features that decide whether a streaming app feels professional or homemade.
Playback integrates with the CDN, transcoding and DRM provider you already use. The app consumes signed URLs or tokens from your backend, not hard-coded links, so content can be protected and revoked.
Where content is licensed, the DRM step is mandatory — I integrate the vendor SDK rather than inventing a protection scheme.
Users on metered data want lower default quality; TV users on broadband want the best available. Both should be able to choose. Concurrent stream limits and device registration keep shared accounts from becoming a revenue leak.
Playback analytics — start, buffer, error, completion — show where viewers actually drop off.

Yes. I work with the provider your content or platform team already uses and wire the SDK into the player rather than replacing the infrastructure.
Not usually. Those are better handled by a streaming platform or CDN vendor. I integrate with them and build the apps that consume the streams.
